Time:1:14 pm.
Mood: gloomy.
I climbed into my car to hear the tragic news story about Nick Adenhart  and his two friends. I work two blocks from Lemon and Orangethorpe; I drive through that intersection at least twice a day. Needless to say, I had to go around on my way in and over lunch because the authorities are still investigating. The cars hadn't even been moved as of an hour ago.
22 yo
that's just sad. It's even more disturbing to learn that the driver that hit the car has multiple DUI's and a suspended license. I heard he's 22 also.
I guess the accident occurring so close to my daily  where abouts really reels it in. I see the crowds milling around the corner and wonder WTF they think they are going to see over there. The spilled blood of a young athlete? I guess I just don't get it.... I also didnt get in when my bubbly co-worker busted out with an excited "Have you Heard????"before I had been in the office for one minute. (BTW, the norm around here is that no one talks to my grumpy ass when I walk in, they give me about ten minutes to settle) Morbid much? Yes, I heard, I find the news making the day a bit gloomier than the weather.

Subject:FAIL
Time:1:23 pm.
Mood:Scrappy.
Prop 8 just legislated legal discrimination. I have never been one to feel strongly about political crap. Personally, I find it tiring and my energy is best spent improving my life. Well, I did, until this.
I feel the passing of this proposition will indeed detract value from my life. Half of my friends cannot legally be married to someone they love. Not only that, 8 supporters lowered the value of marriage by voiding the "love" component: now you only need to be male and female.

Many of my friends and I volunteered, donated, and rallied. I saw so much support for NO on 8. What happened here?

When I worked the phone banks for No on 8, most people who protested did so either because of their faith or because they were certain it would be taught in schools. That stupid, thoughtless teacher in San Francisco didn't help. I hope she is proud to have provided "yes on 8" people with ammo for their most effective claim. She couldn't have possibly thought that they would mention permission slips. or that voters would go through the research to check the validity of such claims. YES ON 8 propaganda worked. Three weeks ago at the phone banks we tallied: 220 people voting no, 47 undecided and 61 yes. Our call sheets were tailored to the undecided voters. What happened? with numbers like that, even if undecided turned yes, "No!" should have prevailed.

I also find one other factor in these "yes" votes: people who didn't understand what it meant. One customer said to me " they are gonna do what they're gonna do. marriage is just a piece of paper anyway". Uhm, no. it's not like that.
How many people are thinking like that out there? Probably a lot. And when this comes around again ,THOSE individuals are going to be the ones that need to be reached. They need to understand that marriage is not just a piece of paper. People need to understand  their freedom of religion is not compromised by allowing others to have equal rights within the state. A church is not going to be forced to marry gays anymore than Synagogues have to perform Catholic mass. The right to religion does not include the right to oppress others. Children? do all married couples have kids? are all kids part of a family with their mother and father? no. It was effective propaganda for 8 though, wasn't it?
If out-of-state money is going to fund discrimination in California's constitution, maybe we ought to think about limiting or all together eliminating campaign funding from out of state sources on California Constitutional Amendments (notice the limitation is restricted here). Why should out-of-state interests so heavily effect California's future? I do not believe 8 would have prevailed without the large amounts of out-of-state funding it received.
I do not beleive this fight can end until all are equal. It is not over. I will be there, calling, rallying, voting, talking to more people. Will you join me ?
I was perplexed that 4 failed and 8 passed. If fundamentalist value passed 8, then those same voters should have passed 4. Why is banning gay marriage more important than "saving babies" and "parents rights" and religion trying to ban all abortion? Because it's not just religion, it's general discrmination.

Subject:Farewell to my old friend
Time:5:26 pm.
Last night when I came home, Sarah cat was not doing well so I slept out in the living room with her. I went to my doctor's appointment, came home, picked up Sarah to take her to the vet and go to work.
However, they put me in a room instead of sending me on my way. My vet said I could do a work up to see what was wrong; but that she had deteriorated immensely since her March visit. Whatever was wrong with her was likely untreatable.; probably either cancer or heart disease. She had difficulty breathing indicating that something serious was also going on with her lungs. I could tell my vet would rather not prolong Sarah's suffering. She also had the professionalism to be delicate and let me run my course to accepting this reality as best as I could at the moment. I had to let her go. It was probably the most heartbreaking ten minutes I have had in recent memory but also the most merciful course to take.

Do you believe in omens?

When I was a kid I had this white Turkish Angora with a blue  eye and an amber eye. She became really sick but the vet we had at the time was the type of unscrupulous character who encouraged us to keep her alive knowing she was suffering and terminal. After a miserable month and two thousand bucks, Mama Kitty crawled into her carrier and stared at my dad, letting my folks know it was time to let her go.
A couple months later, I dragged home Sarah.
My vet has a cage out front where they will put a homeless kitty up for adoption; one cat at a time. The cat that was in there today was a spitting image of Mama Kitty; the mismatched eyes were even on the same side (I checked a photo). She was about the same age Mama Kitty was when we found her.
No, I didn't take Priscilla home. But it served as reminder to not prolong suffering for Sarah.

Goodnight, my loyal friend. I miss you so much already so I'll see ya at the bridge.

Subject:this is the new year? do over, please
Time:4:57 pm.
Mood:grieving.

He left work early Friday, offered me a hand shake and I gave him a hug. Happy New year, see ya Wednesday.

Today, I struggle to make it through the day at work.
We all are, actually.  It all began with a call from Jeff's mom, Elaine, around 9am. He hadn't arrived yet, but I asked her to have him call us when she hears from him. He's been ill a lot lately; many times we hear from him around 10 or so. but 10 passed, Elaine called again to talk to Ron. She still hadn't heard from Jeff. Ron, my boss, thought of driving by Jeff's place but couldn't because his car is in the shop. I felt sick. DO NOT let Elaine go... send an officer on a welfare check. Don't go Elaine.... I tried to work, but I just didn't feel good about this. Nothing sounded less like Jeff than flaking on his family without so much as a phone call, I thought, I'm gonna be sick.
I think they sent Troy, Jeff's brother. I deeply hope they sent the police, I would have called them myself if I didn't think it would induce unnecessary panic.  Although, in hindsight, I am certain Elaine was already panicking: Jeff never showed or called on NYE as he was supposed to. That was three days ago; Ron decided to try her back. Jeff's sister in law answered.
Jeff passed away. We do not yet know when or how; but the last person who spoke with him to our knowledge was his friend Joanne, on NYE. My co-worker of seven years; someone I have seen nearly everyday for almost seven years is gone. See, our office is small, and for five years it was even smaller. For five years, Jeff spent 40 hours a week five feet away from me. We had our clashes, but more often we were teaming up to deal with some of our old colleagues, who were less than ideal to cope with. We plugged through it; lead this branch to unprecedented growth, out of a dark era into the much more pleasant place it is now. A million jokes without context. A co-worker, a friend.... glad I hugged him goodbye. I had no idea it would be the last time I saw him.

the new thing in OC... you know those white lines that separate parking spots in a shopping center? Those advertize the up and coming "desparate housewives" episode.
Are they kidding me? as soon as you climb out of the car; there is the banner on the asphalt. No escape.

Subject:La Velvet Margarita Cantina
Time:12:21 pm.
Mood: happy.
This restaurant in Hollywood, let me tell ya, this restaurant stepped up to the plate. At the last minute, I had to throw together a "Surprise" birthday party for James. My teammate suggested this restaurant. Friday night I began the calling of his friends, and to my surprise, everyone could go.
Except of course, James was pussyfooting around about whether he was going to go out or work.
LVMC still worked out a way to accept my 20 person reservation on the Saturday afternoon of the dinner. Only three people in the party had been there before, so it was a smart move on their part. They will definitely see some of us again.
I can't complain about any of it; excellent service, delicious food, and drinks weren't too weak or too strong. their menu caters to a variety of diets: my vegan friend who has a gluten allergy was even able to eat there.
This Mexican restaurant uses a Day of the Dead theme, has lounge, smoking patio, and bar. If you have an event and are lost for idea; check 'em out: www.velvetmargarita.com

They need to let me go home. I am scanning kitty rescue sites. Lots of them. Pondering how I can really be a bonified cat lady with only one cat. I want Gus. I want Fluffy. I want a few of these furry beasts. Sarah the Cat, however, wants no friends. She keeps me from calling and getting a cat NOW.
Spoiled brat, she is.

Subject:Housing
Time:9:48 am.
Opinions PLEASE!!!!! Yes, you! I know, it's less than exciting, but I need input!!!!

I currently have a 1 bedroom condo, lousing wall unit AC, no parking, community laundry, and no other real amenities in my building. As much as I love the little place, it's time to move on.
I will NOT leave my area. But my price range leaves me a tough choice:

I can get a two bedroom, in an average, older building, with parking, might have laundry, might not, might have a pool or not. When I say average and older, I mean a lot like the building I am in now.
OR
I can get a really nice one bedroom (one is an 8th floor corner unit on Ocean) in a pretty fancy building with a lot of love (amenities). Some of these one bedrooms come with two- not just one parking spot.

Initially, I had these goals: two bedrooms, more amenities, balcony patio or small yard, and a parking spot. I realized my mortgage will double, but I'll be fine with that. In fact, according to debt ratio suggestions, I can go a little higher if I can get myself past the mental shock! of it. As far as sq ft, well, I won't get a whole lot more of that anyway.
However, weighing this scenario is proving to be tough and I'd love to see what outside eyes think. Especially, if it seems like a dumb thing to do to go from a 1 bdrm to a 1 bdrm, pay double, just to have things I have only been moderately inconvienced by not having.

Subject:New Orleans...
Time:10:24 pm.
Mood:attempting to recover.
The Good....

1. TRAVELMATES!!!!!! they rule 'n shit.

2. the hotel- what a beautiful place. Clean, in the heart of the cleanest area left in the quarter. Not only is Monteleone ritzy enough for my taste, but that bed was for dying in. Good god, it was comfy.

3. Cafe Beignet- God bless fruit plates and Diet Dr. Pepper on Tap. The biegnets aren't all that bad either...but I know where to get something like it here. Unlike Diet Dr Pepper on fountain.

4. Bella Morte and Strommkern rocked the house. Probably Rasputina...and you'll see why I say that in "the bad". But I'll just add- the Strommkern guys and Bella Morte are all nice. If you don't talk to them, it's yer own fault (to quote something a wiseman once said)

5. Meeting the married folk from Indiana.

6. the Dungeon- because that little bar had the coolest bouncer, a great jukebox, and yummy drink they call "Midnight Potion"

7. The Local Shopkeepers/ Waiters / Drivers- because they all welcomed 1000+ goths descending on their city with a smile and a "thank you for coming despite this damage".

8. Joe's Wine cellar- nicest man in a family run liquor store on Bourbon. He did not inflate his prices because he was in the quarter. And he knew his vodka like a jeweler knows gems.

9. The Italian Pie shop...found by accident after a bus ride down Magazine.

10. Jackson Square- because it's pretty

11. Kate- the waitress at Remoulade because she gave us great tips.

12. The pussies that live outside the police station. They're adorable survivors that probably keep the rats in check.

13. my pal DJ SailorGloom's sets... most the stuff I danced to...he spun. Yay! Glad he made it out because I haven't seen him since I was in Hawaii.

The Bad...

1. The cold I came in with, it just gets a "bad" rating though, because it went away quickly.

2. The over abundance of seafood/ diary and the under abundance of much else. Granted, the things I could eat weren't bad.

3. What hurricane damage in the areas I saw. Heartbreaking, I tell you, just unbelievable and depressing.

4. the maids being loud in the hallways in the early morning- didn't they know the drunks were trying to sleep?

5. my choice of walking shoes on Thursday- note: Fluevogs for the most part are wonderfully comfortable, but not the Jollene boots for long hauls. Okay for mall, but not for Disneyland. I ended up leaving during Rasputina because I just couldn't stand on my feet any longer.

6. the way the Howling Wolf treated us. Changing drink prices, taking change as tip, raising the Credit card minimums... changing a lot during the course of the event. No where to sit.

7. Hand Grenades- they are *not* the strongest drinks in New Orleans. Me and Angeldye, we did the official test...not the strongest drink.

The Ugly:

1. The smells of the city

2. me, after several vodka tonics and a 32 ounce Hurricane. Not that I remember much of it, and I'm kinda glad I don't...

3. the amount of garbage. It's unbelievable

4. "Olestra"- the bottom heavy lady that hangs out in front of Walgreens leaning on the trash can. She wears tiny shorts, has a rather large bottom and thighs and shit running down her legs. Caked on shit. Her thighs are scarred (from chaffing and shit?) and a bit hairy. She can be smelled from a half a block away. As ugly as this is, it's even worse that human lives like this in our country.

5. The New Orleans version of Montezumas revenge. I have never barfed so bad in my life, or so much, and it fucking hurt like hell. Maybe one day I'll be able to eat a hamburger again, but it won't be anytime soon. Not that the burger I ate made me sick, it may have been it, but because it was one of the last things I ate when N.O.R. decided to pull up what it could from the top. And,yes, when there was nothing left there, it did pull from the back. DON'T DRINK THE WATER!!!!!

Wow! a new icon! Thanks Penance : )
and...Happy New Year to you all!!!!!
Well, I've returned from my vacation in Hawaii this week. I think I'd like to live there for a couple months sometime in my life. It's beautiful and warm, and the people are extraordinarily nice, and nine days just isn't enough time to do everything. We stayed on Oahu in the Waikiki tourist pit. I didn't mind it much. I had a Macy's downstairs from the hotel, I swam with the fishies, climbed Diamondhead, drank with pops at a Luau, and celebrated NYE at Dungeon-Hawaii. Good times.
Now, it's time to put together the New Orleans trip in April.
